These images portray postmodern artist Duane Hanson’s comment on suburbia.
It is important to understand the historical emergence of suburbia as a symptom of mid-century post modernization of consumption. Today, under neoliberalism, we no longer have an economy that depends on industrial manufacturing, which was the case during the GI bill; we have families in the information sector (e.g. high finance and administration) and as service workers. Suburbia is about reproducing people to buy, the revamping of the american middle class.
In the 1940s Lima, Perú began going under transformation due to large groups of migrants arriving to the coastal city from the central highland, La Sierra. Due to the encroachment of transnational capital in more rural areas of Perú, lower income families began moving into los cerros also called pueblos jóvenes. A prime example is Villa El Salvador, one of the most fascinating urban developments in the city.
